Something really weird is happening between me and both directors of my costume design projects. And it’s all about money and creativity. It’s so funny how tightly wound the two are. For my part, I get excited about costume purchases, almost each and every one.
Anyway, I haven’t heard from one director for a few days. I’m wondering if he dropped me from the project (a short film). The thing is, he’s actually designing the project. Yep, it’s another one of those. We collaborate and then he purchases the items himself. This is my second job like this. I don’t know if it’s about control but both of the directors emphasized “sexy” for their female actors. Maybe it’s partly fulfilling some portion of a fantasy. That’s not an insult. It’s probably natural to the male psyche.
But when you’re really attached to it… to the women… and you have to dress them yourselves, well… where does that leave me?
Anyway, he doesn’t know any of this. I’ve done a LOT of work on his film through online research and fabric trips to get samples; plus looking through my own stock. Even if he has dropped me, I’m putting costume consultant on the credits. Actually, the funny thing is that I already decided to NOT get the costume design credit because I’m not really happy with how the costumes are shaping up. He acts, one minute like he doesn’t have the money but then will purchase something.
So, if I don’t hear from him, I”ll send him an email with that request. But I’m putting it on IMDb regardless.
I spend hours browsing IMDb and seeing the behind the scenes info on films. I usually look at directors and wardrobe people. I love to see their trajectory. Mine is a bit weird. I’m top heavy on assisting versus actual designing. There are a couple of paths to success. One of the best one’s is hitching your star to someone already there. That hasn’t worked for me… I feel like my approach is more similar to an actor scrutinizing a script as a project he should or should not do.
I happened to see a job offered in Cally, where I want to go. I also looked at the room rentals. Not bad. I HAVE TO SAVE MONEY FOR A PLANE TICKET! That’s key. I really would like some kind of open ticket but I don’t think they make those anymore.
I also need a plan for a car rental. I guess, If I stay 4 weeks, that’s about $400-$500, not including gas. Housing for a month should be no more than $500, not including food. The plane ticket should be no more than $500. So, 2,000 will allow me to squeak by.
Meanwhile, I still owe Oct. and Nov. rent and all but $100 from September. December and January have been paid, thankfully. Plus, if I add up all the money I owe family it’s $1,000.
I could make a dent in these numbers if I had some substantial income. I found out yesterday that my student loan from law school is in default. I owe $160,000. Right. I hinted to the rep that Occupy Wall Street was heading over to the Student Loan department of the government, where it belongs.
Anyway, back to LA. How to save $2,000 from air…
